Reiki and Energy Healing
Reiki and energy healing are therapies for our bodys energy fields. You may know these as your aura, chakras or meridians. These are known in eastern medicine as our energy fields. Our bodies hold within them the effects of our experiences, relationships, and traumatic events that have not been healed at the time or shortly after an event. When a traumatic event happens we often heal any physical wounds but often people do not completely heal their mental and emotional or energetic wounds.
Bessel van der Kolk, MD notes, trauma is specifically an event that overwhelms the central nervous system, altering the way we process and recall memories. “Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then,” he adds. “It’s the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside people.”
According to Stephen Porges, PhD, not only does the body remember a traumatic experience, but it can actually get stuck in the trauma response mode. Trauma often haunts the body the same way it haunts memories? Stephen Porges developed a sound therapy protocol to regulate/reset the nervous system. This is known as Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). SSP has many years of scientific research to back it and it has supported many clients with extreme trauma, anxiety, Asperger’s, ADD, ADHD, irritable bowel and gut issues, and pain including fibromyalgia. Read more about SSP here.
Any event that and we do not completely cognitively logically process and heal continues to be triggered within the central nervous system. Our nervous system is the system made of nerve cells called neurons. Neurons are specialized to carry “messages” through an electrochemical process. They carry energy to cells. We know some of the messages nerves carry through the body such as messages to move or when something is hot. We do not know the full capabilities of the body, brain, or nervous system.
Energy healers and ancient civilizations believe in the ability to manipulate the body’s energy. Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Celtics, Maurois, etc all believed in this ability.
Teachings passed down from many cultures believe trauma, emotions, stress, mental and physical distress, environmental stresses affect our central nervous system and in that, our energy systems. This impacts our ability to function at our full potential.
Energetic healing supports the healing process by clearing blocks in the energy fields, repairing and re-balancing the energy so that the body can move toward Homeostasis which is the ability to maintain a relatively stable internal physiological state that works to keep balance despite changes in the world outside.
Energetic Healing is a term used for any therapy that works to balance the energy circuits and balance our body’s own healing mechanisms.
Some well know therapies that come under the heading Energetic Healing includes:
Reiki, Acupuncture, Chakra Healing, Flower Essences, Sound, Light and Colour Healing, Crystal Therapy, Reflexology, and Kinesiology.
Energy healing is a holistic approach that looks beyond the physical body to working on the subtle energy systems such as the meridians, aura, and chakras, where the cause of the dis-ease can be located.
Emotions especially can get stuck in the body and cause dis-ease. A good way to look at an E-motion is Energy in Motion. If it does not get processed and gets pushed down it becomes stuck in the body where eventually it causes pain or disease. Transpersonal counselling can help to understand the emotions and process them so that healing can occur on the mental, emotional, and physical levels.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.”
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life.
Its use is not dependent on one’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.
During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Mikao Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five prinicples of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Mikao Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.
